About Blood Sugar Metabolism
Numbers of those with blood sugar metabolism problems are growing at an alarming rate around the world. It is wise to adopt a broad approach consisting of dietary modifications, exercise, and natural nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and herbs to help regulate blood sugar disorders, before this imbalance develops into a more serious condition.
When a meal is eaten, it is broken down into glucose, which is released into the bloodstream to be distributed around the body. Glucose is needed to create energy to power the cells of the body. In order for glucose to get from the blood stream into the cells, insulin is required, a hormone that is produced by the beta cells in the pancreas. It acts like a key in a door lock, enabling glucose to enter cells.
If someone has a blood sugar metabolism disorder, then they may have insufficient levels of insulin in the body, or their body cells may have a resistance to insulin (possibly due to carrying excess bodyweight), this would cause high levels of blood glucose in the blood stream. This is dangerous because it creates free radicals, highly destructive molecules that can damage the body’s cells, particularly nerves and arteries.
At the site of arterial damage, fatty plaques build up, causing obstructed arteries. The heart has to work harder to pump the blood through the narrowed passageways and circulatory problems may start to develop.
